Response from the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada to our letter dated November 7, 2012
Sisters and Brothers,
Our recent bargaining win has reminded us of the incredible power we have when we stand together. That win meant that each of us has thousands of dollars more now and will also grow future salary increases even faster for us and for future members.
Now is the time to use that united strength again to stand up for the future of our pensions, the future of our bargaining and the future of our pay system.
We are disappointed with the Supreme Court of Canada's judgment today. The Supreme Court recognized that public service plan members made a significant contribution – 42.2 per cent or almost $12 billion – in paying down the national debt for all Canadians when the government appropriated the pension plan surplus.
Sisters, Brothers and Friends,
By now you should be aware that the employer will be asking all the employees to report to the office 3 days a week in September of 2024. This decision was taken without consultation with your union.
PSAC and other bargaining agents (PIPSC and CAPE) have launched actions and UTE fully supports these campaigns.
We know some of you have already completed the form below, but if you have not, we are encouraging you to send a letter to your MP and the President of Treasury Board using this PSAC link to make sure your voice is heard!
“Canadians expect top quality service when it comes to accessing important emergency benefits. Privatizing a call center opens the door to a breakdown in communication, breach of privacy, and frustration for those who need urgent help.” – Marc Brière, National President of the Union of Taxation Employees

The Harper government is seeking to rapidly pass a sweeping election law that Canada's Chief Electoral Officer has called an affront to democracy. The aim of this bill is not to introduce much needed positive reforms to election law in Canada, as has been claimed by the government. This legislation is a blatant attempt by the Harper government to stack the deck in favour of the Conservatives in the next federal election.

In April, we asked you to boycott National Public Service Week because we were outraged over the employer’s unnecessary use of the moratorium on term conversions. Since then, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) chose to follow Treasury Board and require workers to report to the office a minimum of three days a week starting in September. At the same time, the employer advised us that approximately 2,000 of our term members working in its Contact Centres would see their contracts expire on May 10, not to be renewed.
