In a historic announcement made this morning, the National President of the Union of Taxation Employees, Marc Brière, joined with other union leaders at a press conference to further promote and support the Black Class Action Lawsuit. Since the conception of this lawsuit, the Union of Taxation Employees (UTE) embraced this initiative and advocated on behalf of our members who are encompassed in this legal pursuit.
In fact, union leaders at the press conference called on the federal government to settle the Black Class Action Lawsuit in the wake of the government’s admission that the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) discriminated against its Black and racialized employees.
UTE is committed to combatting anti-Black racism. The fact that the CHRC is discriminating against their own black employees is outrageous.
Not only has UTE promoted the cause, disseminated information to all members and educated our members concerning this matter, we have also demonstrated tangible and visible support by donating funds to assist with expenses incurred in these proceedings. In fact, in early March, at a special meeting of the UTE Executive Council, we agreed to donate an additional one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000.00) towards legal expenses related to the lawsuit. Moreover, we have encouraged our Locals to assist in the funding efforts.
We are pleased and proud to support this worthwhile initiative spearheaded by one of our own leaders and Local President, Brother Nicholas Thompson, to address the inequities, injustices and systemic discrimination suffered by our Black members and laud the efforts of the leaders of this initiative.
